Ladder Safety Tips

Whether you're doing construction on your own or having contractors like Benchmark Contracting working in your home, ladder safety is something everyone should be familiar with.

In the US alone, there are over 164,000 visits to the emergency room each year due to ladder incidents. Here are just a few tips for using a ladder safely!

  • Never stand higher than the third step from the top.

  • Set the ladder on firm level ground.

  • Lean into the ladder and try to keep your hips between the side rails.

  • Always face the ladder to climb up or down, using both hands to grasp the steps instead of the side rails.

  • Never leave tools loose on the top platform of a ladder. If you need a number of tools while on a ladder wear a tool belt.

  • Try not to walk under ladders...you might get bad luck!

And remember, when you are working on a construction project yourself, underestimating safety measures can lead to needless mistakes!

  • Don't rush jobs. Rushing leads to carelessness and carelessness usually results in injuries.

  • Never work alone on a construction project. Having a partner on the job helps reduce the risk of injury and ensures someone is available to assist should an injury occur.

  • Also, keep a first-aid kit on hand in case of minor cuts or bruises.
